Career in Banking

If you are aiming to be a bank employee, take up the Common Written Examination (CWE) conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) and approved by the Indian Banks Association.

In order to reduce time and hassles in the recruitment process of its personnel, the Indian Banking Association has initiated a common national level entrance test for 19 public sector banks. The test will be held twice a year and at two levels, Clerical and Officers.

A candidate can attend bank interviews for any of the 19 banks, based on the scorecard issued by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). This is a major advantage for candidates, as they need not pay numerous examination fees to apply for various bank examinations. Expenses related to attending the various tests can also be saved.

It is estimated that approximately 65 per cent employees of Public Sector Undertaking Banks are going to retire during 2012-2013. That means, these banks will need about five lakh employees during the said period. Further, the banking sector has considerably expanded with the opening up of 25,000 new bank branches all over India, which will need an additional 2.5 lakh personnel. Thus, in all 7.5 lakh jobs have to be created before 2014. Therefore, this is the right time for bank job aspirants to find employment through the CWE.

In 2011, the CWE has notified clerical level jobs. Applications are to be submitted online only. The last date for submission is September 24, 2011 and the date of examination is on November 27, 2011. The test is to be held in 112 cities across the country. In Karnataka there are five examination centres: Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Gulbarga, Mangalore and Belgaum.

In order to be eligible for the CWE, the candidate must have scored a minimum of 60 per cent in Class 10 or 55 per cent in 10+2, or must have a degree from any recognised university. He/ she should be between 18-28 years of age as on August 1, 2011. (applicable in 2011)

However, there is age relaxation of five years for SC candidates, three years for OBC candidates, ten years for disabled candidates and five years for ex-servicemen. The examination fee for general candidates is Rs. 350 and for SC/ST/PWD candidates it is Rs. 50 only. The fee can be paid through National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) or online or internet banking.

As the submission/registration for CWE is online, the candidate should keep the e_receipt/NEFT challan, scanned photograph and signature and personal email ID, before applying.

The syllabus for the clerical cadre CWE covers five subjects and will be divided into:
*Test of Reasoning (50 marks),
*Test of English Language (25 marks),
*Aptitude Test (50 marks),
*Awareness (with special reference to the Banking Industry — 50 marks), and
*Test of Computer Knowledge (50 marks)

For each wrong answer one fourth or 0.25 of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted. The descriptive paper will be evaluated only after a candidate secures the minimum qualifying marks.

IBPS will issue a score card on the basis of marks obtained in the CWE. This score card will be valid for one year from the date of issue. Candidates can appear in subsequent examination(s) to enhance their scores. Once the validity period expires, the candidate will have to retake the exam. After the test, the score card will be sent to the qualified candidates by registered/speed post.

After online submission of application, you will get a register number and password. This will be sent to your email address or as a text message. No acknowledgement will be provided for the submission of application. However, you can take a printout of the same for your future reference. In case you want to modify the contents of your application, you can do so before September 26. Your e-receipt/NEFT voucher has to be submitted when you attend the written test.

The following are the 19 banks that will accept the CWE scores: Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Corporation Bank, Dena Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Oversees Bank, Oriental Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Punjab & Sindh Bank, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, United Bank of India, UCO Bank, Vijaya Bank. The State Bank of India group will not be a part of this common entrance test.
